Dr. Seema Bawa

Dr. Seema Bawa is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET), Patiala, where she has been serving since 2004. She is an accomplished academic leader, researcher, and passionate mentor whose contributions have significantly shaped computer science education, research, and institutional development over the decades. Throughout her distinguished journey at TIET, she has held several key leadership positions, including Dean (Outreach), Dean (Student Affairs), Professor Incharge of the Nava Nalanda Central Library, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (for two tenures), Head of the Centre for Information Super Highway, and Network Manager.

Before joining TIET in 1999, Dr. Bawa worked as a Project Leader and successfully executed several international projects, including the prestigious SEASAFE project—a ship-balancing system developed for a Swedish client in accordance with Lloyd’s Register of Shipping standards. Complementing her academic accomplishments is her valuable industry experience as a Project Leader and Senior Software Engineer at Inde Dutch Systems (India) Ltd., Chandigarh, and as a System Analyst at SLIET, Longowal. This unique blend of academic and industry experience has enabled her to effectively bridge the gap between research and real-world applications.

Her academic and administrative achievements reflect a distinguished career spanning education, innovation, research, and mentorship. Holding an M.Sc. in Statistics from IIT Kanpur, an M.Tech. in Computer Science and Data Processing from IIT Kharagpur, and a Ph.D. focused on Parallel and Distributed Algorithms for Test Generation, Dr. Bawa has built an impressive academic legacy. She has authored more than 202 research publications, supervised 28 Ph.D. scholars, and guided over 65 M.E./M.Tech./M.Sc. theses. She has also led several sponsored research and development projects supported by AICTE, DST, TCS, MoCIT, and DAE.

Through her scholarly contributions, academic leadership, and mentorship, Dr. Bawa has played a significant role in advancing knowledge and shaping future generations of engineers, researchers, and academicians. Her expertise spans a broad spectrum of emerging and foundational technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Blockchain Technology, Smart Parking Systems, Internet of Things (IoT), Natural Language Processing, Distributed Systems, VLSI, Software Testing, and Quantum Computing. Over the last decade, she has consistently emphasized sustainability as a central theme across her research endeavors, reflecting her commitment to developing technologies that create long-term societal impact.
